Ingredients and materials
- 3 ripe bananas, peeled (about 300 g)
- 400 g plain pasteurised yoghurt
- Wide food-safe freezer container with lid
- Fork or potato masher, bowl and clean serving spoons
Make it together
- Confirm labels and participation with the centre. Children mash peeled banana in individual bowls using clean utensils.
- Combine banana with chilled yoghurt. Children can describe the change in consistency while an adult mixes.
- An adult transfers the mixture to a labelled covered container and freezes it under the centre’s procedure. Stir after about an hour if practical; freezing time depends on the container and freezer.
- When ready to serve, an adult portions the mixture while it is soft enough for the children’s approved texture requirements. Do not serve hard frozen chunks.
- Use individual bowls and utensils. Keep the main batch cold and manage any remaining mixture according to the centre’s time and temperature procedure.
Before the children join in
- No raw egg, honey, whole nuts or hard toppings are used in this starter.
- Dairy alternatives need individual review for allergens, nutrition and how they freeze.
- Do not soften and refreeze repeatedly, and do not return served portions to the main container.

What does the freezer change? How does the mixture feel before and after freezing?
